FLORIDA DEVELOPS STRATEGIC TRANSPORTATION PLAN

A new strategic plan is announced by the Florida Department of Transportation. It was developed in a coordinated effort led by the seven districts of the DOT, to chart the agency's course during the years between now and the end of the first decade of the new century. It demonstrates the need for 1,300 miles of new expressways and other major arterial highways, nearly 4,000 miles of additional traffic lanes, new fixed guideway systems and commuter rail service in several large cities, high speed rail service linking Tampa Bay with Orlando and southeast Florida, and 4 new regional airports. The cost of the plan during the first 10 years is estimated at $40 billion. A separate plan to finance the needed improvements is scheduled for development later.
