PREDICTING THE FRACTURE OF ASPHALT MIXES BY THERMAL STRESSES
Laboratory experiments have shown that when an asphalt mix is constrained and cooled, it fractures at a temperature that is critical for the binder. This critical temperature depends on the binder properties as measured by penetrations at two temperatures, and the relationship is presented in the form of a nomograph. A low temperature test for bitumen, in which the sample is constrained by glass plates, is shown to be a convenient substitute for tests on asphalt mixes. (A) /TRRL/
