TEST LOADING OF A HYDRAULIC SAND FILL
PROVBELASTNING AV SANDFYLLNING
A harbour installation being constructed at lulu on land previously under water is built on hydraulic sand fill on firm rock. There is very little information on the deformation properties of such fill, and test loading was therefore performed on the section first constructed. The hydraulic sand is uniformly graded with a mean grain size of 0.3 mm. Tests showed thickness of sand fill to be 9 m. The test load was a bank of sand applied in 3 stages. Surface settlement was measured at 8 points, and also settlement at different depths below the center of the test load. Most settlement was instantaneous, there being negligible time-dependent settlement. Settlement after stage 3 was 45 mm at the center and 13-15 mm at the foot of the slope. Settlement at different depths was practically linear from rock to the surface. Settlement had been calculated by 3 methods, all of which gave a good idea of its magnitude; the method based on oedometer tests was relatively accurate. /TRRL/
