GEOTEXTILE ACTS AS MOISTURE BARRIER

The use of a geotextile to control moisture under the pavement by the Texas Departmesnt of Highways and Public Transportation is described. A trench is dug along each side of the pavement, lined with an impermeable membrane, and backfilled. Addition of the impermeable liner means that, in dry locations, moisture is kept out. Studies show that a smooth road profile results. The geotextile used is a composite nonwoven polypropylene fabric and impermeable polyethylene membrane. It is impervious to damage by soil chemicals and hydrostatic resistance is excellent. The details of the installation of the material are briefly described.
