GROUND VIBRATIONS CAUSED BY ROAD TRAFFIC
MARKVIBRATIONER ORSAKADE AV VAEGTRAFIK
The purpose of the project was to establish by field trials the factors influencing the magnitude of ground vibrations and the relative quantitative importance of these factors. Factors of main importance were found to be type of subsoil, vehicle type and road surface roughness; on a weak clay subsoil the volocity amplitude was ten times larger than on a sandy till. Locations with sand and stronger clay gave intermediate results. Heavy trucks and buses caused more than 10 times as large velocity amplitudes as passenger cars. Considerable differences were observed between different trucks and between trucks and dumpers. Running across artificial bumps of 44 mm height gave velocity amplitudes up to ten times greater than running on a smooth road. A certain influence was exerted by vehicle velocity. The difference between different standard pavement types and between different axle loads of the same vehicle is negligible. Factors influencing the magnitude of vibrations are subsoil type, distance to vibration source and certain other transmission parameters. /TRRL/
