FLEET SAFETY TAKES A BEATING

A Survey of organizations including Fortune 1000 companies, showed that although motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of occupational death, many corporations still bypass fleet safety programs. Only 62 per cent of major corporations have a formal safety program in place for employees who drive motor vehicles on company business. It is noted that companies that have implemented fleet safety programs, may not only reduce fatal accidents but may also save themselves some money in the process. It was also found that firms without a program were less stringent in their enforcement of rules that are usually part of a formally established program. The benefits of company safety programs are reviewed. Aspects of a fleet safety program that need to be addressed are listed and discussed. The various policies and rules that should be included in a typical program are noted and include the following: mandatory safety belt use; prohibition of alcohol use while driving company vehicles; on- and off-the-job accident records, accident investigations, records on costs of accidents, driver training, corrective procedures for problem drivers, and access to an employee assistance program.
