TYPOLOGICAL ANALYSIS APPLIED TO THE DIAGNOSIS OF ROAD SAFETY. TRAFFIC OPERATION AND MANAGEMENT. PROCEEDINGS OF SEMINAR M HELD AT THE PTRC SUMMER ANNUAL MEETING, UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX, ENGLAND, 15-18 JULY 1985, VOLUME P269

The author highlights the usefulness of road safety diagnosis as an aid to decision process. Its aim is to supply sound interpretation of data from a vast number of accidents. It is made up of numerous carefully selected indicators calculated with the help of models providing statistical reliability. The author describes a method of diagnosing accidents, which is based on the chi-square test and uses thirty safety indicators. Three sources of data are required: 1) record of accidents; 2) reference values calculated on a very large scale; and 3) breakdown of the network studied into 20 to 30 km long sections. A computer program calculates and selects the chi-square values which are most significant and characterises each section of the network studied.
