PARKING CONTROL VARIABLE MESSAGE SIGNS. TRAFFIC OPERATION AND MANAGEMENT. PROCEEDINGS OF SEMINAR M HELD AT THE PTRC SUMMER ANNUAL MEETING, UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX, ENGLAND, 15-18 JULY 1985, VOLUME P269

Within the framework of the mission urba 2000, the objective of which is to promote technological developments, the three towns of Bayonne, Anglet and Biarritz offer a particularly interesting experimental field for the development of new technologies. A feasibility study was carried out using numerical data and results of surveys on the use of parking facilities. The findings confirm the necessity of installing parking control variable message signs. The proposed system complements that of parking control and permanent direction signing. However, this system is designed so as to be autonomous and it can be transposed to other sites. It is expected that the advantages of this system, installed in July 1985, will be as follows: 1) rationalisation of the management of existing parking facilities; 2) shorter driving distances in search of a parking space; 3) improvement in the quality of service; 4) development of new technologies.
