THE ROLE OF THE CONSTRAINTS IN THE ENTROPY MAXIMISING METHOD
DE ROL VAN RANDVOORWAARDEN IN DE ENTROPIEMAXIMALISATIE
The method of entropy maximization for developing the gravity model makes use of a number of hypotheses. One of them is the assumed existence of constraints the solution has to fulfil. In this paper it is shown that any desired solution can be obtained by a proper choice of these constraints. As the meaning of the constraints is not clear, it is concluded that the hypothesis regarding the existence of constraints is unjustified. The method of entropy mazimization offers no foundation or deduction, but merely a description of the gravity model. /TRRL/
