PROPOSAL FOR MODIFICATIONS TO U.S. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION SPECIFICATION 21PF-1 FIRE AND SHOCK RESISTANT PHENOLIC FOAM-INSULATED METAL OVERPACK
The Department of Transportation Specification 21PF-1 protective overpack for the 30-inch product cylinder has been in use in the transport of isotopically-enriched uranium hexafluoride (UF6) since 1968. Proposal is submitted here for (1) rehabilitation of used overpacks, including modification for easier maintenance and longer service life, and (2) for an improved design incorporating similar modifications for newly constructed overpacks. This report also presents supporting documentation which assures that the UF6 packaged in modified DOT Specification 21PF-1 overpacks meets the regulatory requirements for transport. Engineering drawings and bills of materials are also included.
