ADMISSIBILITY AND LIMITS OF THE USE OF ENTRANCES AND EXITS IN TUNNELS
ZULAESSIGKEIT UND EINSATZKRITERIEN VON EIN- UND AUSFAHRTEN IN TUNNELN
On the basis of an analysis of the traffic behaviour and accidents it is examined at selected one-way traffic tunnels with underground junctions and turn-offs to what extent such special structures are admissible and by which criteria of use they are governed. The evaluations of the traffic measurements show that the various types of entrances and exits influence the traffic flow in a different way. In general, negative effects can be expected in the case of wedge-shaped entrances because of the considerable differences of speed between the main stream and the side stream on a short merging distance. The analysis of accidents does not reveal any hazardous points existing as a consequence of underground junctions and turnoffs respectively. In most cases the accidents are not caused by tunnel-inherent problems.
