INCIDENCE ASSESSMENT OF TRANSVERSE CRACKING IN CONCRETE BRIDGE DECKS: CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIAL CONSIDERATIONS. VOLUME I. FINAL REPORT
The objective of this study was to determine the incidence of transverse cracking in concrete bridge decks and to investigate for possible relationships between the observed cracking and the construction and material aspects of the bridge superstructure. A total of 72 recently constructed bridges in the piedmont region of North Carolina were surveyed to determine the extent of transverse cracking. The sample included steel and prestressed concrete girder bridges with approximately equal numbers being of simple or continuous span. The analysis undertaken examines the observed cracking per linear foot of bridge deck in relation to: construction events, construction procedures, environmental conditions, and concrete mix parameters.
