STUDY ON MANOEUVRABILITY OF A FULL SHIP

This paper deals with two problems of manoeuvrability. One is a problem to study the nonlinearity of full ship motion and its effect to manoeuvrability and course stability. From the results of zig-zag test and spiral or reversed spiral test, a simulation model with simplified nonlinear character was introduced by the authors. Using this simulation-model, they examined the results of zig-zag test and course changing test, and found this model useful to analyze the motion of actual full ship. And then, they discussed stability by the method of phase plane analysis. The other is to study the correlation between actual and model ship. For this object, the experiment was performed with a tanker model using the boundary layer suction method. The results suggest that this method had rather good correlation than ordinary method.
