A ROUGH INTRODUCTION TO THE PRODUCT-CARRIERS

In today's world, the consumption of petroleum, used as an energy source or as raw material for the synthetic chemical industry, is rapidly increasing. Accordingly, tankers to transport crude oil are becoming mammoth-sized in order to reduce transportation costs. Giant oil storage bases to receive these tankers and petro-chemical plants are now being constructed in unpopulated districts to avoid public calamity and the hazards of pollution. Eventually, the demand for product-carriers to transport products from these giant bases to consuming areas will escalate. In order to transport the petroleum and chemical products, product-carriers must be specially constructed and equipped to suit the physical and chemical properties of the product. This paper briefly introduces the concept behind design of various product-carriers, taking examples from the vessels built in our shipyard.
