A STUDY OF THE FATIGUE STRENGTH OF CORNER CONNECTIONS IN BOX STRUCTURES
The purpose of this paper is to present the results of fatigue tests as well as some data regarding experimental stress analysis of curved knee corner connection with thin walled box section. Based on the results, influences of the radius of curvature of the curved inner flange, effecting the stress concentration and fatigue strength of the curved knees, are discussed. A brief analysis is tried and an approximate formula for evaluating geometrical stress concentration factors of the curved knees, is derived. From this, a method to predict fatigue strength on fatigue life of the curved knee is developed by the use of statically determined stress distribution in the curved knee inner flange, together with a S-N curve for as-rolled mild steel.
