A FEASIBILITY STUDY OF THE USE OF PEAT AND PEAT EXTRACTS AS A PARTIAL REPLACEMENT FOR PETROLEUM BITUMEN IN ROAD BINDERS
The purpose of the investigations was to determine whether the partial replacement of petroleum bitumen, used as a road binder, was possible by: (1) blending a solvent extract of milled peat (peat bitumen) with petroleum bitumen; (2) blending milled peat with petroleum bitumen; (3) addition of milled peat to the aggregate fraction of bituminous (bitumen-stone aggregate) road surfacing mixtures. Possibilities (1) and (2) were investigated by assessing the respective blends by standard rheological tests used for the quality control of bitumen binders and possibility (3) was investigated using the Marshall test procedure for bituminous mixes. Blends of peat bitumen with petroleum bitumen appear to be technically acceptable for road binders. Blends containing peat bitumen were generally more viscous, less temperature susceptible than normal penetration grade bitumens. There was no significant change in the slope of viscosity/temperature plots derived from absolute viscosity measurements, made at a standard rate of shear, over the range 20-45 degree c. It is suggested that a blend containing 20 per cent of the peat bitumens in petroleum bitumen would be most appropriate as a road binder. (TRRL)
