THE INFLUENCE OF ROLLING NOISE ON THE NOISE PRODUCTION OF ROAD VEHICLES. A REVIEW OF RECENT LITERATURE

The rolling noise component of the total vehicle noise is continually increasing. This is not so much due to an increase in rolling noise but more to a decrease in drive-line noise. The rolling noise starts playing a dominant role at a speed of 50 km/h for passenger cars and at a speed of 70 km/h for goods vehicles. Further measures to reduce drive-line noise will therefore have only little effect on the total vehicle noise in traffic. To further reduce total vehicle noise it seems necessary to direct more effort to a decrease in the rolling noise component. Investigations have led to the conclusion that improved road surface materials also yield promising results with regard to immediate implementation on existing roads. With the current noise measurement procedures for type approval, too much emphasis is laid on the recording of drive-line noise, while rolling noise has an uncontrollable influence on measurement. For more accurate recording of total vehicle noise, it is necessary to draw up specifications for the road surface to be measured on.(a)
