ROADSIDE VEGETATION MANAGEMENT MANUAL
A manual was written to familiarize appropriate PennDOT personnel with the fundamentals of roadside vegetation management in Pennsylvania and to provide specific guidelines for carrying out management programs. The entire text is stored on a word processor and is amenable to revision and updating as the need arises. Basic concepts discussed include: objectives of roadside vegetation management, effects of environmental factors such as geographic location, climate, and weather on plant growth and herbicide activity, description of various types of vegetation and growth cycles of plants, and mode of action of herbicides. Specific guidelines include explanations of the various aspects of management--mowing, application equipment, proper application of herbicides and plant growth regulators, handling chemicals safely, brush control, herbaceous weed control, biological and cultural controls, and decision-making. Attention is given to problem weeds, special or sensitive situations where spraying is not advised, and public relations. A section on specific chemicals used by PennDOT provides a condensed description of each chemical and a reference key by which an appropriate chemical treatment can be chosen by first identifying the situation and desired end result. A cross reference indicates sensitivity of specific plants to each of the herbicides. Conversion charts, a glossary, and list of recommended books complete the manual.
