LAND CLASSIFICATION FOR URBAN GROWTH. APPLICATION OF A SYSTEM OF TERRAIN CLASSIFICATION TO URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING
The research paper argues that a system of terrain evaluation is needed since the intrinsic properties of land are important for the location of most land uses, and rational planning is needed to accomodate rapid urban growth. There is a brief description of the size, climate, geology and drainage of the state of victoria and these are related to the agricultural and urban land uses. The development of the methodology of soil classification is traced, highlighting the role of different sciences. Likewise land classification is examined with particular attention to pragmatic land classification as used for urban planning in Australia. The main focus is on a recently devised method of terrain classification and derives its basis from the product of the interaction of geology and climate with time as the operator. The classification consists of a series of sub-divisions of increasing detail which include provinces, terrain units, terrain patterns and terrain components. These are defined and mapping scales suggested. There is a brief section of the evaluation of land and a short application is presented. The problem of aesthetic evaluation is noted and an appendix of land characteristics for terrain evaluation is added. /TRRL/
