BASIC DATA FOR TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS CONCERNING STUDDED TYRES. A STATE OF THE ART REPORT ON THE FUNCTION OF TYRE STUDS AND THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY THEM
UNDERLAG FOER TEKNISKA BESTAEMMELSER OM DUBBDAECK. EN UTREDNING OM DUBBARNAS FUNKTION OCH SKADEVERKAN
The results of this investigation show that wear caused by studs is a function of the relative movement between tyre and carriageway, the size, shape and hardness of the stud, stud projection, static stud force, number of studs and stud weight; improvement in friction on ice is a function of the size and shape of stud, stud projection, static stud force and number of studs; deterioration in friction on bare pavements is a function of static stud force and number of studs. On cars, both winter and summer radial tyres provide better friction than cross-ply ones; wear is also less. Only radials should therefore be fitted with studs. Studs must be properly anchored; holes should be provided during vulcanization. Shape and diameter of stud casing influence function and damaging effect of studs. Scratches caused by studs are related to static stud force; this should be limited to 200 n. Stud projection should be 1.0-1.5 mm and there should be 10-12 studs per tyre per 100 kg vehicle weight. Number of rows should be 6-8. On lorries also, all tyres should have studs. The largest lorry studs have tubular casings; these cause extensive damage and should be banned. /TRRL/
