THE APPLICATION OF COMPUTERS TO SPECIAL TRANSIT SERVICES: A REVIEW
A review of the application of computers to special transit services for the disabled is provided in this report. The various functions undertaken in the offices of an operator of special transit services are reviewed. These include: client registration, trip reservation, service scheduling, vehicle dispatching and operations monitoring. The setting and background of the various computer applications are described in the cities of Toronto, Montreal, Quebec, Sherbrooke, Ottawa, Edmonton, Hamilton and Victoria. An analysis of each unique application is provided in terms of its functions, files, data elements, reports, features and performance. From this analysis, general trends in the application of computers to special transit services are derived and presented.
