NUMERICAL BENDING OF BULB FLATS
For bending and straightening the very large, welded-tee longitudinal frames now being used in large tanker and bulk-carrier construction, the Hugh Smith Company has developed an exceptionally powerful frame bender. This machine exerts a force of 700 t on the frame and with the use of push-button controlled variable bending centers, both transverse frames and welded-tee longitudinal frames can be handled. For transverse frames the close bending centers are used to produce the smaller radii, and for longitudinal frames up to 40 in. deep, the wider centers are used. On the question of templating the frames curves, the open front design of the Hugh Smith machine allows templates to be applied directly to the edge of the frame.
