WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBILITY SYSTEMS MAINTENANCE: CURRENT PRACTICES AND RECOMMENDED COST CONTROL PROCEDURES FOR CALIFORNIA'S PUBLIC MOTOR BUS AND DEMAND RESPONSIVE FLEETS

The 1987 study investigated maintenance costs of wheelchair accessibility systems in California public transit and demand responsive properties. The report consists of three parts. The first section describes the approach and data collection activities. Data is presented for fleet size categories and vehicle types in the second part of the report. Results of a questionnaire survey, on-sight investigation and telephone interviews as well as the project team's experience form the basis of the cost improvement strategies in the final part of the report. Three basic approaches are recommended. First detailed maintenance cost records and performance report monitoring is necessary. Resource allocation should be reviewed particularly with respect to preventive maintenance and inspection of wheelchair lifts. The third strategy suggested is to provide regular training and refresher training and refresher programs for both maintenance personnel and vehicle operators.
