STRATEGIES FOR AREA TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEMS: PRESENT AND FUTURE (PAPER D18)
Different techniques for coordinating traffic signals in an area have been subjected to full-scale tests by the transport and road research laboratory. The characteristics of the techniques and results of the tests are summarised in this paper. It is concluded that the case for using traffic-responsive systems is not proved because fixed-time plans based on historical data and calculated off-line by A technique such as transyt, the combination method or sigop, gave a performance at least as good as any other technique tested and would have been less expensive to install. Possible future developments in traffic-responsive control strategies are reviewed. /TRRL/
