THE TRANSPORT OF GOODS BY ROAD: 1970-1972
Since 1970 a continuing survey of the transport of goods by road has been conducted on a quarterly basis to provide more frequent estimates of the work done by the goods vehicle fleet. This paper gives the results obtained for the first 3 years of operation of the continuing survey. The survey is used to provide, on a quarterly basis, estimates of tons and ton miles, and on an annual basis, more detailed breakdowns of selected aspects of the work done by the goods vehicle fleet, such as the proportion of tonnage carried of different commodity groups and average length of haul. The sample of vehicles used in the survey is drawn from A register of all goods vehicles on operators licences. From this a stratified random sample of 3000 vehicles is drawn each quarter. Each week 1/13th of the quarter's sample is used and operators of the selected vehicles are asked to fill in a questionnaire giving details of the work carried out by the vehicle. A detailed description of the composition of the sample and a copy of the questionnaire are given. /TRRL/
