INFLUENCE OF THE CAR DRIVER POSTURE ON HIS PROTECTION IN FRONT IMPACT. BIOMECHANICS OF IMPACTS IN ROAD ACCIDENTS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE SEMINAR HELD IN BRUSSELS, 21-23 MARCH 1983
It is admitted that the conditions of crash simulations in compliance tests are too idealized. The present trend is to approximate more closely to reality. This is particularly true with the use of a "whole-vehicle performance test" replacing compliance procedures for various car components taken one by one. It is therefore important to specify the simulation conditions which most affect occupant protection. Among the conditions taken into consideration, is the seating position of the occupant. Various studies based on mathematical models have shown that the value of current biomechanical criteria depends partly on some parameters linked to the posture. The authors propose to define more realistic postures of light vehicle occupants and to specify their influence upon the protection effectiveness during dynamic tests in frontal impact. In this respect, the first important parameters certainly are the pelvis position and orientation which may affect the whole body kinematics, particularly with the risks of occurrence of submarining. The submarining phenomenon in the case of three point belt restraints will be therefore the main subject which will be studied by means of the three following aspects: accident analysis, survey of front occupants posture, and dynamic study of the submarining phenomenon.
