DEVELOPMENT OF COMMERCIAL VEHICLE REAR DRIVEN AXLES ON MULTI-AXIS TEST SET-UPS. PREDICTION AND SIMULATION OF IN-SERVICE CONDITIONS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE CONFERENCE HELD AT THE INSTITUTION OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS

This paper deals with the test-rig testing of axle casings. The forces, generated by hydraulic actuators, are introduced into the axle casing via a dummy wheel. The magnitudes of the test forces are determined from readings taken on the vehicle. Some examples are given to demonstrate how the test results for an existing axle casing can be used as a yardstick in evaluating the effects of changes in material or in methods of manufacture. All the axle variants found to be good were later put into series production. (TRRL)
