SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY AS A TOOL FOR THE STUDY OF FAILURE IN STRUCTURAL MATERIALS. ACMSM 9; THE NINTH AUSTRALASIAN CONFERNECE ON THE MECHANICS OF STRUCTURES AND MATERIALS, 29-31 AUGUST 1984, UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY
The scanning electron microscope (SEM) is used to examine normal failure mechanisms in two contrasting, but structurally important, materials--steel weld metal and a polymeric fibre. The weld metal is shown to fail by a ductile mechanism, whilst the polymer failed by axial splitting. The observed smoothness of the polymer fibre is consistent with its known high tensile strength and excellent fatigue properties. The value of the SEM for the study of a range of practical engineering materials is demonstrated. (Author/TRRL)
