PEDESTRIANS AND CYCLISTS AT ROUNDABOUTS. MANAGING OUR ENVIRONMENT AND CARING FOR PEOPLE: THIRD NATIONAL LOCAL GOVERNMENT ENGINEERING CONFERENCE 1985

This paper presents the results of two accident studies carried out to examine the safety of pedestrians and cyclists at roundabouts. The first is a "before and after" study of reported pedestrian and cyclist casualty accidents at sites where roundabouts were introduced. The results of this study suggest that the introduction of roundabouts leads to slight reductions in pedestrian casualty accidents and to increases in cyclist casualty accidents; however, due to the low numbers involved and the absence of exposure information, these results are not conclusive. The second study is an examination of pedestrian and cyclist casualty accidents at roundabouts in Victoria for a period of 4 years (1980 -1983 inclusive). This study highlights the low frequency of such accidents (31 accidents for pedestrians and 65 accidents for cyclists in the 4 year period) and on the basis of this concludes that the concern for pedestrian and cyclist safety at roundabouts, whilst well-intentioned, is unfounded. The literature review however suggests high accident rates for cyclists at roundabouts and, with this in mind, specific points on roundabout design are made with a view to further enhancing safety and amenity for cyclists and pedestrians.
