REINFORCED EMBANKMENTS AT THE GREAT YARMOUTH BYPASS. POLYMER GRID REINFORCEMENT: PROCEEDINGS OF A CONFERENCE SPONSORED BY THE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING RESEARCH COUNCIL AND NETLON LTD AND HELD IN LONDON 22-23 MARCH 1984
Construction of embankments up to 8m high is in progress along the route of the A47 Great Yarmouth Western Bypass over very soft organic alluvial deposits up to 22m depth. Geogrids have been used in the base of the embankments to totally enclose a layer of coarse sand and gravel to form a freely draining reinforced granular mattress. This paper describes the site preparation and the construction of the granular mattress. Considerations regarding the layout of the geogrids are discussed including the layouts at roundabouts. The jointing requirements and jointing methods are described and commented upon. For the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 284425. (Author/TRRL)
