GEOGRID REINFORCED EARTH EMBANKMENTS WITH STEEP SIDE SLOPES. POLYMER GRID REINFORCEMENT: PROCEEDINGS OF A CONFERENCE SPONSORED BY THE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING RESEARCH COUNCIL AND NETLON LTD AND HELD IN LONDON 22-23 MARCH 1984
Synthetic tensile elements to reinforce earth fills have been used successfully in the past in the UK and Japan though not in Canada. For a provincial highway project in Brampton, Ontario, property acquisition costs and other problems necessitated the design of retaining structures or steep side slopes for the 7 m high embankment required. Cost benefit studies showed that steep side slopes reinforced with synthetic tensile elements were considerably cheaper than other alternatives. This method was therefore selected. The paper describes the successful design and construction in 1983, of the reinforced earth slope using Tensar SR2 as the main reinforcement. Instrumentation to be installed for monitoring purposes is also described. For the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 284425. (Author/TRRL)
