DESIGN METHODS FOR STEEP REINFORCED EMBANKMENTS. POLYMER GRID REINFORCEMENT: PROCEEDINGS OF A CONFERENCE SPONSORED BY THE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING RESEARCH COUNCIL AND NETLON LTD AND HELD IN LONDON 22-23 MARCH 1984

Design calculations for steep reinforced slopes are described. Charts for preliminary design are presented for the case of steep slopes over a competent foundation reinforced by horizontal layers of polymer grids. Design evaluations require a mix of calculations and performance criteria to ensure satisfactory behaviour. Descriptions of the calculations and criteria used to derive the design charts are given. A simple procedure to determine reinforcement spacings is introduced, based on a spacing constant q. The relationship between the stiffness of reinforcement and the soil strength deformation behaviour influences the selection of design values. A design value of soil strength at large strain is recommended for polymer grid reinforced soil, although it is anticipated that equilibrium may be established sooner at smaller strain magnitudes.
