SOME ASPECTS OF DRIVER BEHAVIOUR AFFECTING TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS. PROCEEDINGS I - II INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF TRAFFIC MEDICINE IN YUGOSLAVIA, DUBROVNIK, YUGOSLAVIA, SEPTEMBER 25-29, 1984

Proper control of traffic is a basic requirement for safe and efficient traffic movement which should be given careful thoughts before a highway is opened for traffic. An important phase in this process involves providing the road users with sufficient and clear information on its proper use. The traffic control devices used for this purpose should be carefully and properly designed and located in order to produce the best results in terms of accidents and delay reduction. In addition to traffic control, the behaviour of both drivers and pedestrians affect road safety and efficiency. Providing those road users with proper information would enable them to behave correctly, and this consequently would lead to a significant reduction of accidents and increase in highway capacity thus providing a high level of service. This paper highlights some aspects of drivers' behaviour that have significant effect on causation and frequency of traffic accidents and resulting casualties in Kuwait. It investigates the drivers' behaviour from the point of their observance of and obedience to different traffic control devices. Some remedies which are believed to act as effective accident reduction measures are also outlined. For the covering abstract of the whole conference see IRRD 280469. (TRRL)
