THE BEHAVIOUR OF FIXED CANTILEVER WALLS SUBJECT TO LATERAL SHAKING
A programme of research on the seismic behaviour of retaining walls has been in progress at Cambridge University since 1981. Centrifuge tests have been conducted both on cantilever walls and isolated mass walls, retaining dry sands of varying grading and density. This paper describes the centrifugal modelling of fixed-base cantilever walls retaining sand with a horizontal surface level with the crest of the wall. The bumpy road shaking device was used to simulate seismic disturbance. Base shaking tests were conducted on model microconcrete walls to investigate failure behaviour when a series of shaking (earthquake) episodes were triggered. In similar tests on aluminium alloy model walls strain gauges were installed at different depths to measure dynamic bending moments during simulated earthquake episodes. Data of displacements, accelerations, and bending moments have been shown to be capable of straightforward correlation. The results provided further support for the approximate quasi-static elastic and plastic interaction models previously proposed by the authors. An attempt at the modelling of models using different bumpy tracks on elastic walls of different scales retaining identical fills proved to be quite successful. The number of the covering abstract of the symposium is IRRD 286058. (TRRL)
