PENETROMETER APPARATUS FOR USE IN THE CENTRIFUGE DURING FLIGHT

A series of tests investigating the performance of embankments on soft clay has been performed on the Cambridge centrifuge. An essential feature of this work is the correct determination of the undrained shear strength of the soft clay in the centrifuge during flight. A penetrometer apparatus has therefore been developed for the determination of the clay resistance at different locations during the centrifuge test. This paper describes firstly techniques and apparatus used to prepare clay beds for centrifuge tests of embankments on soft clay. A detailed description of the newly developed apparatus is then presented, as well as results of tests using this equipment. The number of the covering abstract of the symposium is IRRD 286058.
