EVENNESS OF RUNWAYS

L'UNI DES PISTES

Runway evenness is a characteristic which has a direct influence on the dynamic behaviour of aircraft and conditions the safety of landings and take-offs. This article describes: 1) the consequences of surface irregularities; 2) methods of studying the dynamic behaviour of rolling aircraft; 3) a method of evaluating runway evenness based on the use of the LCPC longitudinal profile analyser APL 72. The APL 72 has been used on runways since 1975, the evaluation method described is derived from the summing up of all the results obtained on runways and from general studies in this field (bibliographies and experimental studies). This article was first published in French in the Revue des Routes et des Aerodromes, 1983-03, No 597, pp 75-79. (TRRL)
