TRAFFIC NOISE: CHARACTERISTICS, EFFECTS AND POSSIBLE ATTENUATION TECHNIQUES

IL RUMORE STRADALE: CARATTERISTICHE, EFFETTI E POSSIBILI TECNICHE D'ATTENUAZIONE

This article identifies two approaches to the reduction of traffic noise in built up areas: an active approach which consists in modifying the noise characteristics of the source; and a passive approach, aimed at protecting the exposed buildings. It is shown that although vehicle noise is a function of speed, a reduction of speed could reduce traffic flow to an extent that would cancel out any noise improvement gained. A better alternative is to keep heavy vehicles out of the traffic flow, rerouted on alternative routes. Roadside sound insulating barriers must also be highly sound absorbent to prevent a build up of reflected waves which could surmount the barrier. (TRRL)
