TWO COMPUTING METHODS FOR DETERMINING THE DYNAMIC FORCES EXERTED ON A ROAD PROFILE BY A SINGLE AXLE VEHICLE AND THEIR EXPERIMENTAL VERIFICATION

This study was carried out as part of an investigation of the mechanical behaviour of expansion joints in bridge decks. These joints have recently been a major item in bridge maintenance, usually requiring repair or complete replacement of the joint and often of the surrounding areas as well. The rapid deterioration of this part of the road is ascribed mainly to the dynamic loads imposed by commercial traffic. Two algorithms are developed to evaluate the magnitude of these loads and the interaction between the road profile and the vehicle. The first is a numerical model for calculating the response of the system for any given dynamic configuration arising from an artificial obstacle, or from a real road profile. The second algorithm uses the Fourier spectrum of the road profile for calculating the response of the dynamic system.
