TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH ON PRICING AND REGULATION: OVERVIEW AND SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH

This survey selectively reviews the literature on carrier pricing and regulation, shipper demand and market structure and suggests directions for future research. The approach taken is to break down the problem into characterizing agents, then consider equilibria and processes by which equilibria are modified. This is approached by first posing models of carriers and shippers that are used to categorize a sample of recent studies. A brief discussion follows concerning the interaction of these two types of agents in markets. This is then followed by a selective review of theories and analyses of regulation and deregulation. Various suggestions for research are provided in subsections at the end of the carrier and shipper sections, and in the final section of the paper. (Author/TRRL)
