CORRELATION OF HOT DUCTILITY CURVES WITH CRACKING DURING WELDING
Reviewed are several criteria currently in use for predicting cracking sensitivity from hot ductility curves. No one method is universally accepted because of disagreement on results among various investigators. Some of this disagreement appears to have been caused by variations in critical testing parameters and by the effect of structural factors on hot ductility response. A brief analysis is made of a possible cracking mechanism and how it is related to hot ductility curves. This analysis suggests that the zero ductility range on cooling is the most indicative factor to use in predicting cracking sensitivity. A mid-temperature range dip to zero ductility would also be expected to have a significant effect on cracking. An attempt has been made to point out several of the testing parameters that may have an effect on ductility response during hot ductility testing. The use of different testing parameters by different investigators has contributed to confusion in interpretation of results, and points out the need for a standard testing procedure.
