SLIPPERINESS STUDIES OF WET ASPHALT PAVEMENTS IN ISRAEL
A full-scale experiment on a main highway lane carrying 2000 commercial vehicles per day is described. The experiment was devised to investigate the skid-resistance and general behaviour of bituminous surface courses and a slurry-seal made with crushed basalt, in comparison with a crushed dolumite, bitumionus-concrete, standard surface course and a crushed dolomite sand slurry-seal. Short sections were constructed with different types of mixtures and two maximum sizes of aggregate particles. The performance of the experimental sections over 2.5 years has been assessed. Although firm conclusions cannot be drawn on the long-term behaviour of the basalt surfacings, their superiority over the dolomite course was established. Of all basalt mixtures used in the experiment, the open-graded type exhibited the highest skid-resistance quality. It was found, that before 2.5 years of service have passed, the skid-resistance of crashed dolomite bituminous-concrete and slurry-seal sections decreased below the recommended minimum level.
