THE EUROPEAN UNDERGROUND

Innovative engineering techniques which are being used in tunnelling operations in both Lyon, France and Vienna, Austria are described. A hydro-shield equipped, concrete extruding tunnel driver which is designed for use in waterbearing cohesionless soil was used in Lyon. In Vienna, two different techniques, jet grouting and ground freezing, using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) were employed. Jet grouting is used to provide support and stabilization by injecting jet piles into the various areas of the ground to be tunnelled. Ground freezing which creates a continuous freeze wall plate above the tunnel crowns, providing structural support and water repellency and preventing alluvial air loss prevention was used for tunnelling under a telecommunications building because grout stabilization would have disrupted the sensitive equipment.
