SALT - A GUIDE TO REGULATING ITS USE
Costs are discussed as a point of comparison between salt and alternative deicing materials. The more important functonal properties of rock salt in a winter maintenance operation are listed. Michigan's strategy for handling winter storms is noted, as well as factors to be considered in planning such a strategy. Michigans's Department of Transportation is committed to using salt conservatively. A chart is provided that tells snow plow operators when to apply salt and when to stop.
