SNOW REMOVAL ON STREETS AND ROADS IN TOWN PLAN AREAS

The winter maintenance of streets and roads in town planning areas was investigated in winter 1984-85, covering 15 municipalities in various parts of the country. The results for snow removal showed clearly that the quality standard classification prepared by the central organisations of Finnish municipalities was not followed. All streets were kept approximately in similar condition. The condition of less trafficked streets clearly exceeded recommendations. For example, on a residential street of the 3rd category a saving of 33% was achieved in snow removal costs when the recommendations were observed and the area was compared to an adjacent area kept up according to earlier practice.
