THE PERCEIVED RISK OF BEING DETECTED WHILE DRINK DRIVING - A SURVEY OF SYDNEY RESIDENTS

A questionnaire on the perceived risk of detection while committing a driving offence was administered to about 1,600 Sydney residents between the 5th and the 13th of December, 1981. Three independent research companies conducted the survey under different conditions. The results indicate that the perceived risk of detection for each offence can be arranged in the following ascending order:-1. Drink driving but not obviously affected. 2. Speeding. 3. Drink driving while obviously affected. These results are similar to the results obtained from the same questionnaire in Victoria. The finding of most interest is that the results are influenced by the research company and method used to conduct the survey. This has implications for future surveys (TRRL/Author)
