THE PERFORMANCE OF THIN SECTIONS OF FULL DEPTH ASPHALT PAVEMENT AND TRIAL SECTIONS OF OVERLAY

The first part of this paper reports the performance of test sections of thin full depth asphaltic concrete (AC) pavement installed at the Australian Road Research Board at the end of 1982, from which time 10,000 ESA's have been applied. The design and performance of the sections is compared with that in the Australian Asphalt Pavement Association guide to the structural design of flexible pavements and relationships are established between surface deflection and pavement temperature. Performance is also compared with elastic layer predictions. The second part of the paper reports on the performance of two thin sections of overlay installed on a heavily-stressed arterial road in Melbourne. The deflections after overlay are compared with those measured on three control sections. In situ soil testing of the subgrade is also reported and an estimate of remaining life made (TRRL/Author).
