MAJOR GABION WALL FAILURE

The paper describes the failure of an eight meter high gabion wall constructed at the foot of a very steep rock slope. This historical background to the failure is discussed comprehensively and problems associated with the design and construction of gabion walls are highlighted. The results of a load test on a typical gabion basket is presented and recommendations are made for future designs. For the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 286603. (Author/TRRL)
