PERFORMANCE OF EMBANKMENTS AND CUTTINGS IN GAULT CLAY IN KENT

The M26 motorway, and adjacent section of the M25 motorway and the M20 motorway in Kent run along the outcrop of the gault clay which is notorious for its swelling/shrinkage behaviour. In addition the near-surface layers of the clay have been severely affected by periglacial action forming relatively weak soliflucted and cryoturbated zones. The paper describes various trials carried out for the embankments and cuttings on these schemes, and the resulting earthworks designs, and their subsequent performance particularly where failure occurred. For the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 286603. (Author/TRRL)
