SLOPE STABILITY PROBLEMS IN AGEING HIGHWAY EARTHWORKS

A survey of earthwork failures on selected lengths of motorway has been carried out in order to identify the basic factors affecting the stability of the side slopes of cuttings and embankments and to attempt to quantify any long-term problems. The survey mainly included areas where over-consolidated clays predominate and covered a total of about 300 km of motorway. The results reveal a significant incidence of shallow slip failures in both cuttings and embankments of the more cohesive soils. Major factors found to influence the rate of failure are geology, age of earthworks and geometry of slope. For the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 286603. (Author/TRRL)
