THE TRACKING OBSERVATION TECHNIQUE IN BICYCLE TRAVEL ANALYSIS: PRINCIPLE AND POSSIBILITIES
DE VOLGOBSERVATIEMETHODE IN HET FIETSONDERZOEK: AARD EN TOEPASSINGSMOGELIJKHEDEN
Traditionally, observations with regard to bicycle travel are made by means of surveys and counts. A number of relevant characteristics cannot be observed with these techniques. A new observation method is the tracking technique: from a number of interception points passing or departing travellers, in this case cyclists, are tracked unobtrusively. While tracking various characteristics of the traveller and his traffic behaviour, of the trip and of the traffic conditions during this trip are observed directly and recorded. This technique can also be applied to car traffic and pedestrians. At the Institute for Town Planning Research at Delft University of Technology a feasibility study of the tracking technique has been carried out with respect to bicycle travel. The technique has been operationalised and evaluated on the basis of an extensive pilot study. Important data items to be gathered were chosen routes, travel times, number of stops and offences. This paper presents the major findings of this study; emphasis is on findings regarding possibilities for practical applications. It was found that with the tracking method a number of relevant data, especially dealing with traveller behaviour, network usage, network characteristics and safety can be gathered in a reliable and cheap way.
